Lecture description: From a traditional Iñupiaq childhood in northwest Alaska to the halls of the Alaska Legislature and the negotiations that led to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, Willie Hensley has witnessed (and helped shape) one of the most remarkable periods of change in Alaska's history.
In this deeply personal presentation, Hensley reflects on the people, cultures, events, and decisions that have shaped modern Alaska. Through stories drawn from his own extraordinary life, he explores the enduring strength of Alaska Native traditions, the impact of statehood and resource development, and the opportunities and challenges facing the state's future. More than a history lesson, this is an invitation to experience Alaska through the eyes of one of its most respected leaders and storytellers.
BIO: William Iggiagruk Hensley is one of Alaska's most influential Native leaders and a principal architect of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA), landmark legislation that reshaped the relationship between Alaska Native peoples and the state.
Born in Kotzebue and raised in the Noatak River region, Hensley grew up living a traditional Iñupiaq subsistence lifestyle before becoming one of Alaska's leading public servants and advocates. His distinguished career has included service in the Alaska House of Representatives, leadership of NANA Regional Corporation, Alaska Commissioner of Commerce, and federal government relations for the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company.
A respected storyteller, author, and statesman, Hensley has spent more than six decades helping shape Alaska's political, economic, and cultural future. His memoir, Fifty Miles from Tomorrow, chronicles his remarkable journey from a traditional Iñupiaq childhood to becoming one of the state's most important voices. In 2025, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to Alaska and the nation.
