Internationally recognized pianist Michael Gurt, who holds the Paula G. Manley Distinguished Professorship at the LSU School of Music in Baton Rouge, will return to Anchorage to perform a solo piano recital at the UAA Arts Recital Hall, Friday May 3 at 7:30 PM. Gurt was the gold medalist in the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in 1982, and he was also a prizewinner in international competitions in Sydney and Pretoria. A soloist with the Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Memphis, Capetown, and Utah Symphonies, Gurt has also appeared as soloist with the China National Symphony Orchestra. His piano skills are held in high regard by UAA's Dr. Timothy Smith who describes him as "a titan of the piano world." Gurt plans to offer works by Medtner, Carter, Poulenc, and others. It is a program that promises to thrill audiences of all ages, as many will remember from his dazzling technical wizardry that was on full display at his last solo appearance in the UAA recital hall some time ago.
