AO was selected by the National Endowment for the Arts as one of the six most promising opera companies in the United States. With a mix of traditional repertoire, innovative works and projects that address current issues and foster dialogue, AO is on a mission "To enrich. Inspire. Educate. Collaborate. Build community...one note at a time."

AO has been commended for its collaborative work with other arts, cultural and community organizations in Alaska including the ACLU, Japanese American Citizens League, Identity, Inc., Alaska Jewish Museum, Alaska Veterans Museum, Rotary International, Alaska Native Heritage Center, Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson, Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, Alaska Dance Theatre, Anchorage Concert Chorus, Anchorage Concert Association, Perseverance Theatre, TBA Theatre and the Anchorage Festival of Music.

Each year, AO serves thousands of adults and youth, residents and visitors through multiple community partnerships, mainstage performances and related events. From educational collaborations with the Anchorage School District that includes free student dress rehearsals and school lunch Flash MOBperas, to active partnerships with UAA Opera Ensemble for AO’s Touring Education Program, AO2Go, all of Alaska reaps the benefits of AO’s operations.
